Dr. Eugene Owusu was the Special Advisor on the SDGs to the former President of Ghana and Head of the SDGs Advisory Unit in the Office of the former President. As Sherpa to the former President, Eugene was the substantive lead on the President’s advocacy and engagement in mobilising support for the accelerated implementation of the SDGs in the international arena and at the sub-regional level. Prior to his current role, from 2015-2017 Eugene was the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in South Sudan, where he concurrently served as the UN Resident Coordinator, UN Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative. Before his assignment in South Sudan, Eugene was the UN Resident Coordinator, UN Humanitarian Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Ethiopia from 2010-2015. Prior to that Eugene was a Senior Advisor in the UN/UNDP Brussels Office facilitating institutional partnerships in Africa with the European Union on behalf of UNDP Africa.
After joining UNDP in 1996, Eugene worked in several capacities in the Africa region, including as Economic Advisor in UNDP Uganda and in UNDP Sierra Leone, and as Deputy Resident Representative in Tanzania. Prior to joining UNDP, Eugene worked in the private sector in the United Kingdom, including notably as Senior Country Risk Analyst and Head of Economic Research at Dun & Bradstreet UK.
